Waiver wire

The Toronto Maple Leafs placed forward Mark Bell on waivers on Monday, while the Calgary Flames have put defencemen Anders Eriksson and Rhett Warrener as well as forward Jamie Lundmark on the waiver wire.

Scott Walker out six weeks

Hurricanes's forward Scott Walker, had surgery on his left hand today and will likely miss up to six weeks because of the injury.

The 25 year-old veteran registered 14 goals and 18 assists in 58 games last season.

Dustin Brown To Be Named Team Captain ??

Nothing is official yet, but all indications are pointing towards young winger Dustin Brown to be the Kings new team captain. Brown had a breakout season last year leading the NHL in hits and scoring a career high 60 points. Anze Kopitar and Jarret Stoll are expected to be named the assistants.

Canucks vs. Ducks Pre-Game Warm-up

The Canucks take to the ice tonight against the Ducks in as they attempt to secure a undefeated pre-season record. Alain Vigneault and his staff have reduced their roster to a total of 26 player with decisions forthcoming in the next 24 hours as to who's in and who's out.

Out of the line-up tonight are d-men Rob Davison and Lukas Krajieck along with forward Cody Hodgson, Matt Pettinger, Rick Rypien and Ryan Johnson. With the announcement of Hodgson signing earlier in the day and him not taking on the Ducks tonight it may be fair to assume that the 18 year-old has made enough of an impression to stick with the club, at least for the start of the season.

Canucks lost Nathan McIver to the Ducks yesterday as Brian Burke picked up the rugged defenceman off waivers. Also on the outside looking in are Nolan Baumgartner who has cleared waivers and is in Manitoba and Jeff Cowan who has also cleared waivers.

Something else to note going into tonight's contest is goaltender and captain Roberto Luongo has now painted a 'C' on the front of his mask.

Habs Waive 2

The Montreal Canadiens have placed Goaltender Marc Denis and defenceman Alex Henry on waivers. If unclaimed they will report to the Habs AHL affiliate team the Hamilton Bulldogs.

If the Leafs won the cup....

Long after Gary has presented to Luke and the buzzer has wrung.
The faithful march from the ACC, the looting has begun:
No car left un-flipped.
No cup left un-sipped.

If the Leafs won the cup...
we'd all be chanting Kabby, Schenn and Hagman.
Jiri, Steen, Grab-O.
Poni, Vesa, Stralman
Cliff, Wilson and Cujo.
If only, the Leafs won the cup....

Because if the Buds did raise Lord Stanley all commerce would stop.
In fact even the TSX would drop.
Unemployment would soar.
And the sick calls would pour in like never before.
If only my team won the cup....

Boy-hood dreams fulfilled.
And the Barilko curse, killed.
The Leaf jokes, no more.
And our foreign policy, no war.

As the days turn to weeks the beer supply grows low.
And for food: theres no place to go.
Soon, the government steps in.
And gets the clean up to begin.

There would be stories and movies.
books, crappy poems and T.V specials.
And to us who've been through the highs and lows.
It would be heaven.
But, the greatest of all would be the end of 1967.
If only my team, the Leafs won the cup....

Shout out to Dr. Suess.

The game tonight against the Jackets is the last of the games Leafs TV is broadcasting free it starts at 5 eastern.

Hodgson Signed; Delivered?

It has been reported that the Canucks and 2008 1st rounder Cody Hodgson have come to terms on an entry level contract. Hodgson who many pegged with a possible opening night roster spot has looked impressive in training camp. With this signing it looks as though Hodgson may start the season with the Canucks with a possibility that he will see action in the 9 games that are allowed under the 2005 CBA deal.

WHL and NCAA

First of all, sorry for not getting this up yesterday. I had an incredibly busy schedule and there was no time to start writing. However, here are this weeks updates in the WHL and NCAA.

WHL:
- Joel Broda of the Moose Jaw Warriors was the Boston Pizza Player of the Week in both the WHL and CHL after tallying 5 goals and 1 assist in 3 games.
- Brent Raedeke of the Edmonton Oil Kings signed a contract with the Detroit Red Wings. He obviously won't get any playing time this year, and might not even get an AHL call-up after the WHL season, but it obviously shows that this guy have potential if the Red Wings decide to sign him to an entry level deal.
- The Portland Winter Hawks acquired Joel Ridgeway from the Tri-City Americans. Ridgeway is an 18-year-old forward who last season scored 2 goals and 5 points in 46 games.
- The Lethbridge Hurricanes had two players sign entry level contracts with NHL teams. Skilled defenseman Luca Sbisa signed with the Flyers, while star forward Zach Boychuk got a contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.
- Justin Falk of last year's champion Spokane Chiefs was signed to an entry-level contract by the Minnesota Wild. The defenseman scored 26 points in 72 games and was +27.

NCAA:
- So far, little news has surfaced in Division I mens hockey. Notre Dame was voted to top their division, while Niagra was voted in theirs. Other top teams; Boston College, Colorado College, and Michigan. The favorite to win it all is Boston College.

The Ian White Experiment

Of all people Ian White played up front last night, and even more suprisingly he looked good.

White played on the right side with Stajan and Steen who contributed with the Leafs first goal. White tallied an assist. Later in the game he almost scored in what would've put the Buds ahead and most likley changed the final outcome.

"...I want to get a taste for it, and I felt comfortable and I liked being out there and I felt we got some good opportunities, so if they want me to play up there I don't mind." said White.

"...Ian did a great job, he skated, stirred some things up, drew two penaltys. He really set up our first goal on a great forechecking effort..." Coach Wilson said of Whites play.

All in all Ian finished with 16 minutes of ice-time, one assist and a big grin on his face.

SchennWatch: Luke didn't play last night but made the trip and gathered some valuable tips from none other than Nik Lidstrom: "...obviously he is the best defenseman in the league and evrything he does out there is just so calm and so poised and hes always in good position...".

With the injuries on the blueline Schenn will probably be with the Blue & White on the 9th when the Leafs open they're season in Mowtown. But, injuries aside, I think Luke has played himself on this team and has been the best Leaf D-man in the preseason

Luke will be in the lineup tonight against the Wings again. Puck drops at 7 eastern and it will be broadcast on Leafs.com .

Sidenote: With the likes of Datsyuk, Holmstrom, Hossa, Kronwall, Stuart and Osgood out and still losing, the Leafs are in more trouble than Roman Polanski circa late 70's.

Nucks Minor Moves

The Vancouver Canucks placed forward Jeff Cowan on waivers on Saturday, while the club lost defenceman Nathan McIver to the Anaheim Ducks via the waiver wire as well.

TODAYS GAME NOTES

Mike Fisher will NOT be in the lineup for the Senators today when they take on the Penguins in Sweden at 2:30 pm eastern time today due to a groin injury.

Petr Sykora Will NOT be in the lineup for the Penguins today due to a "lingering" injury. His spot on a line with Malkin and J.Staal will be taken by Tyler Kennedy.

Alex Goligoski Will be a healthy scratch, his spot will be taken by Darryl Sydor.

SCHEDULE

12:00pm CBC=HOCKEY! THE SEASON HAS BEGUN!!!

12:15ish: Drury and The Rangers Take On Lecavalier And The New-Look Lightning.

2:54:Sidney Crosby and the Penguins are in Sweden to take on Hometown Boy Daniel Alfredsson and the Ottawa Senators.

Stamkos Debut

In just under 1 hours time Tampa Bay Lightning Center and 1st OVERALL Pick at this past June's draft Steven Stamkos will make his debut. If you have a TV all eyes should be on this kid regardless of who else is on the team. Here are a couple quotes from other players and coaches:

NHL Central Scouting Bureau's E.J. McGuire: "He is a dominating force, a potential franchise player."

Sarnia Sting head coach Dave MacQueen: "He's so dynamic. His skill level, awareness on the ice and hockey sense are so much more advanced than a lot of the players in our league. He's got a gear that is above everybody else and he can do everything at high speed. He wows people in that sense . . . it's a credit to the way he was raised, he puts things (like personal recognition) on the backburner and just goes out and plays the game he loves, and has fun doing it."

Hockey Canada head scout Al Murray: “He's like those Bugs Bunny cartoons. He's everywhere. You look out and he's the first guy on the forecheck and you look in your own zone and he's the first guy back . . . so many players with (his) speed come over the (blue-line) but have to slow down to make plays. He doesn't slow down to make those plays and that's really unusual. He doesn't only play well offensively, but plays real well defensively and he's not afraid to get his nose dirty.”

I highly suggest you watch this game as I believe he will make a HUGE splash in his WELCOME TO THE NHL! Moment.

Let The Puck Drop......AGAIN!!!

As you may not know, I posted my predictions a week ago and said that the Penguins, despite their rash of injuries, will come back and tear throught to win the Stanley Cup, defeating the Dallas Stars in 5 games. What do you guys think of this?

What are your predictions?

Leafs Live Online

Leafs TV is broadcasting tonight's game against the Wings. Puck drops at 7:30. I'll be in the chat room under "dennislemieux", see you there.

Just for fun: Wings win 2-1, John Mitchell with the lonely Leaf goal. Book it.

Red Wings cut 15 players

Assigned to Grand Rapids
Ryan Oulahen LW, Evan McGrath C, Jamie Tardif RW, Randall Gelech RW, Darren Haydar RW,
Sergei Kolosov D, Logan Pyett D, Jakub Kindl D, and Daniel Larsson G.

Released
Francis Lemieux C, Francis Pare C, Jason Jozsa D, Tom Galvin D, P.J. Atherton D, and Larry Sterling G.

There are still 33 players at the Wings camp.

Canes cut 2 players; Boychuk close to signing an entry-level contract

The Canes reduced their roster to 28 today, assigning defenseman Bryan Rodney and forward Dwight Helminen to the Albany River Rats of the AHL.

Zach Boychuk, the Canes' first-round draft choice, said he is close to signing an entry-level contract with the team. The terms of the contract should be similar to those of Brandon Sutter's contract.

Sabres cut eight players

The Sabres sent forwards Mark Mancari, Mathieu Darche, Dylan Hunter, Marek Zagrapan, Nathan Gerbe and Tim Kennedy, and defensemen Chris Butler and Michael Funk to Portland of the AHL. Mancari and Darche have to clear waivers and could be claimed by another team.

25 players remain now in camp, including Gaustad who's injured. Mike Weber will likely be the player cut.

Rangers name Chris Drury team captain

As per Larry Brooks:

Drury, long renowned for his leadership abilities, was appointed the Blueshirts' 25th captain by head coach Tom Renney, who unveiled his letter-wearing leadership group at tonight's team dinner in Prague. Drury will be wearing the C tomorrow against the Lightning, and Scott Gomez and Markus Naslund will be his assistants. No surprise here.

The three players will likely play together this weekend as Drury was transfered to right wing.

Pens demote Janne Pesonen to Wilkes Barre-Scranton

As expected, Finnish rookie Janne Pesonen was the Pens' final cut today.
Pesonen will remain with the Penguins in Stockholm during the weekend before reporting to the AHL.
Don't be surprised if Pesonen gets called-up during the season.

Ducks send Bobby Ryan to Iowa (AHL)

The Ducks have sent forward Bobby Ryan to the Iowa Chops (AHL) due to salaray-cap issues. Ryan, 21, was slated to play on the the Ducks' 2nd line with Morrison and Selanne.

Ryan is due to make $1,921,667 this season, including performance bonuses.

Ryan registered 10 points in 23 games with the Ducks last season.

Sergei A D-man??

Sergei Fedorov has had as much of a storied career as any, and some hot girlfriends along the way. But, this year he could go down a road that he hasn't been down much lately....
It's been reported that Sergei has been practicing on the blue line with the caps.

"We're just flirting with the idea," Fedorov said.

We have all seen Fedorov back there so, I think the big story here is....

Is he going to get Defenseman status for fantasy leagues?

I hope, I have him on two teams and am thin at D.

FULL STORY HERE.

Hawks claim Lindstrom off waivers from Ducks

The Ducks put Lindstrom on waivers on Thursday in an attempt to send him to their AHL affiliate. However, the Hawks, very thin at forward, claimed the 24 year-old left winger on Friday.

Lindstrom was acquired by the Ducks in an off-season trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets.

In 37 NHL games with the Blue Jackets, Lindstrom recorded 8 points.

Harding fine after freaky incident

Josh Harding suffered a right cornea abrasion after Martin Skoula's stick blade squeezed through Josh Harding’s cat eyehole. He threw off his helmet and went down in visible pain, or maybe panic, because of where that stick clipped.

He was taken to a local hospital for precautionary measures, but should only miss one or two weeks, as he's still having trouble to open his right eye.

Potter and Fahey sent down by Rangers

From Rangers Report:
Prague, Czech Republic: Rearguards Corey Potter and Brian Fahey were the Rangers' final cuts before tomorrow opener (goaltender Miika Wiikman stays with the team as a third goalie through the end of the weekend, and then will be sent down as well). Neither player is required to go through waivers.

Carbonneau extended by Habs

Bob Gainey has given a contract extension to the Habs head coach Guy Carbonneau on Friday, as I reported on September 17 here on Hockeybums.

The length and the $$$ are still unknown right now. An announcement should be made official when the Canadiens come back from their team bonding in Mont-Tremblant.

Gainey also said that rookie Max Pacioretty (or Pacio-ready if you like) will be sent to Hamilton before the season starts to get some seasoning.

Penguins after Colaiacovo?

According to a source, the Penguins are looking to add depth on defense after Gonchar and Whitney went down due to injury.

We all know the Leafs have a logjam on defense as they have 10 NHL-caliber at their disposal.

The Leafs are asking for a prospect and a mid-round draft in exchange for Carlo the Chinaware Colaiacovo.
