McCabe deal will be made official by 11 AM tomorrow

As per TSN: The anticipated trade that would send veteran Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Bryan McCabe to the Florida Panthers will be made official by 11am on Tuesday.

The deal was held up while the Panthers waited for the Leafs to pay a $2 million bonus due to McCabe on Sept. 1.

With the payout, McCabe, 33, will make $4.15 million in each of the final three seasons of the five-year, $29 million contract he signed with Toronto in 2006.

The Maple Leafs will receive defenceman Mike Van Ryn in exchange for McCabe and a draft pick.

Forget about Zednik or Dvorak being sent to the Maple Leafs.

WOW Mccabe's trade value is HUGE. What a stupid trade for the Leafs, unless Bryan is horrendous in the locker room, we have moved for another injury riddled defensemen. STUPID

WAIT, WHAT? TORONTO IS THROWING A PICK INTO THIS? Oh wow. This sucks. If anything, there should be at least a 2nd or 3rd coming to Toronto with Van Ryn.

McCabe had not much trading value because he was not welcomed anymore. Fletcher did a good job getting rid of his large salary! Mike Van Ryn is a top 4 d-man. Remember he recorded 37 pts and 29 pts before last year's injury plagued season.

Kaberle-Van Ryn
Stralman-Kubina
Colaiacovo-White

The Leafs weakness will no be their defence, it will be their offence.

HORRIBLE TRADE

LOL you have no Finger who costs 3.5 million a season and no Frogren who isn't coming from Sweden to ride the bench. THere is no room for Van RYn and toronto needs players to put the puck in the net. What a crap trade.

what a ridiculous trade. why the hell is toronto throwing a pick into this!? is this fletcher's big "homerun" deal, giving mccabe up PLUS A PICK for a player that will most likely be a number 5 or 6 defensmen? this is ridiculous. im freakin out fletch...what are you doing to us leaf fans? not only did we get robbed but we got robbed by one of the most questionable GM's in the league, mr. jacques martin (see luongo trade, jokinen trade, etc) okay im done before i break my keyboard....don't worry i'll calm down soon.

I don't consider Finger top be a top 6 d-man in Toronto, as for Frogren he'll have to show us what he can do before he makes the team.

SensChirp said...

Whether you consider him as one or not Fred, Finger will be a top 6.

yeah Fletcher paid 3.5 million to Finger to sit him on the bench. Please don't talk of what u have no idea.

You know it once again proves that we here at Hockeybums DO indeed have sources.

I say this because it was us right here at Hockeybums who have been calling this trade for over a month and a half now.

So once again we here at Hockeybums continue to gain our respectability.

You've been calling the trade, but for quite a while you had the hopes of landing Bouwmeester in a deal for McCabe.........that sounded ridiculous back then and now the deal shows what McCabe's true value was.........

Not that McCabe is a bad player, just way overrated after scoring big in a contract season then reverting to form. Montreal had the same thing with Souray, but Montreal has a better GM.....

I think that Fletcher isn't doing any better than what JFJ did....

Anonymous said...

Montreal let Souray walk as he was a free agent, not in a trade.

McCabe had no value and we badly had to rid the team of him. Bottom line is, this was what had to be done and apparently this is what we had to pay to do it. Not too long ago, we were all ready to give McCabe for free, and now that Fletcher is getting something decent in return, suddenly we're all getting robbed. Leaf fans, myself included - just not in this instance, are unbelievable.

It's not Van Ryn you dolt , it's the fact that Fletcher has now given away seven draft picks since he has become GM. Leaf fans are usually crazy and yeah unbelieveable, but right now Leaf fans should be upset. This deal is horrible

Souray was also a UFA , Bryan is signed on for 2 more years, please stop talking.

By the way source you guys called nothing you lied and said that Bouwmeester was coming. Perhaps you shouldn't brag about being wrong.

getting rid of McCabe had to be done, and it got done, consider ourselves lucky we even got something in return people.

Anonymous said...

didnt everyone say they would trade mccabe for a "bag of pucks" and now we got something decent in MVR and people are crazy? so what a 4th round pic, the last 4th round pick we had that was good was Kaberle......like 10 years ago, get over it.

True Anonymous your right we did say Bouwmeester but we weren't the only ones saying that so was "Eklund" and a few other sites but remember at least we admitted that it had no backbone and that we were very doubting of the Leafs obtaining Bouwmeester.

I still personaly think that a forward should have been added to the Leafs but hey the deal hasn't actually confirmed by either team yet so things still may change.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous above- I was going to point that out as well. Everybody kept saying let's trade McCabe for a bag of pucks.
I don't think people realize how badly this needed to be done. We rid ourselves of a defensive liability and a cumbersome contract. If things go accordingly and we draft top 2 or 3, we'll have plenty of money to make a couple of huge signings this year or the year after.

I never said Finger will not be in the top 6 d-men. I just said he was not worth a spot on the top 6 in TO. Big difference! No way he sits out any game at $3.5M per year.

i agree that this trade will help leafs land a big ufa because theyll have the money but this is just a loss. wouldnt leafs prefer meyer and a 4th for mccabe instead of mccabe and a pick for van ryn?

Anonymous said...

Firstly, who knows if the Meyer deal was actually on the table. Secondly, I'd rather Van Ryn then Meyer. We'll get back plenty of picks at the deadline.

TSN is reporting this morning that the dal is McCabe and a pick for Van Ryn and another player to be named.

So, it won't be a "good" other player... probably Zednik or Dvorak or something.

I like it. Van Ryn is a good D-man if he is healthy, which apparently he is now. If not, then it is a salary dump.

Lamoriello the cap genius, had to give up a first and take crap back if I recall in order to give up Malakhov (I think).

It's all about the cap and changing the attitude of the team.

Fred Poulin said...

Look for the player to be named to be Anthony Stewart or Stefan Meyer to come the other way, should this be true.

Souray "walked" as a free agent because Gainey was not as stupid as JFJ to sign the guy to a big deal after one amazing season during his impending UFA status.....

MCCabe is a one dimensional dfenceman who was extremely overpaid.....for every goal he scored, he was soft defensively on three others......

Souray wanted big bucks, Gainey knew his worth and let him go. Gainey also tried to move Souray at the deadline with no takers. Don't try and say he wouldn't do that because Gainey moved Huet, his starting goalie at the deadline......

This is a deal that comes from a GM that gave $3.5M to Finger.....and everyone thought JFJ would sink the ship......

Anonymous said...

Poor poor Leaf fans.. how do you rebuild without draft pics? A LOT of great players come from other rounds besides the first and second. Mind you.. if you want to get rid of an overpaid horrible defenceman.. I guess there's a price to that.

Anonymous said...

Still not official. What is going on here????

"Montreal let Souray walk as he was a free agent, not in a trade."

Read his post again.

"after scoring big in a contract season then reverting to form. Montreal had the same thing with Souray, but Montreal has a better GM"

Referring to TOR handcuffing themselves by signing McCabe to the contract. MTL had a similar situation with Souray, and COULD have signed him as well, and be in a similar situation, but chose to let him walk.

The leafs would have been smarter to do this years ago as well, and use that money on a defenceman that can play defence.
