Hurricanes to extend Eric Staal

The Carolina Hurricanes have called a press conference for 2 PM today. Staal, 23, recorded 38 goals and 82 points in 82 games last season with the Canes. No figures were disclosed.

The rumored deal is that Staal would receive a seven-year contract that would pay him between $7 million and $8 million a year.

Great move by Jim Rutherford who did not waste time in extending the face of the franchise. Expect Staal numbers to improve to around 90 points this season as a healthy Justin Williams should help boost his offensive stats.

EDIT: The deal is worth $57.75 million over seven years or an average of $8.25 million per season.

8.25? a little steep for a point-per-game player, but then again, he's capable of more then that.
