Mr. Lemieux’s Weekly Top Seven

Hey team, Dennis here with this week’s top seven….

Top Seven Overpaid Players

Before we start I want to clear a few things up, I understand free agency drives up prices because of bidding wars but this list is based purely on value to ones team per dollar in the upcoming season. Also, all the figures are from NHLSCAP.

7.Ed Jovanovski at 6.5 million- This might be a controversial one but…What can I say about JovoCop? Over the hill? Past his prime? Both of these work.Although he is 32, I bet his body is that of a 40 year old from the beat down. Since the lockout Jovo has played 178 games averaging 59 a season, on top of that he’s been an annual resident in the minus department and he isn’t getting any younger. I know he scored a career high of 51 points last season but that was on account of a full season which won’t happen in 08-09. How overvalued is he? More overvalued than the going rate of crude oil.

6.Brad Richards at 7.8 million- I’ve never been a fan of this guy, I always felt he was overrated. Playing with Vinnie and St. Louis caused him to overachieve and the cup also helped. But at 7.8 mill he is grossly overpaid. His point totals have decreased every year since he signed the deal in 2006. Also, since then he has been -46, albeit for some pretty bad Lightning teams but also for the stars. He is -57 for his career. How overvalued is he? More overvalued than a JFK reference in a high school speech.

5.Danny Briere at 6.5 million- Last year he was paid 10 million. 10 million. 10 million. To give you an idea of how much that is…..it would take 11 days, 13 hours, 46 minutes, and 40 seconds to count to 10 million. This astronomical number made him the highest player in the league and his production of 31-41-72 makes the number look even bigger. Brier won’t reproduce 72 points and the flyers won’t come close to the type of season they had last year. How overvalued? More overvalued than LaDainian Tomlinson in fantasy football drafts this year.

4.Wade Redden at 6.5 million- Fact: Wade has not been the same since the Sens chose to resign him over Chara (boy do they wish they had that one back). No, this is not the same Wade Redden I remember from those playoff series against the Leafs when I so dearly wished Wade was in the Blue and White. He hasn’t even been an integral part of the Sens for a couple seasons now. Maybe it was all the attention from that fat contract or maybe he is just getting older, but I don’t see how New York is going to somehow bring him back to life. Also, I’ve herd a few times he stated that he would take a discount to play for the Sens even though the media contradicted it, can anyone confirm this? just curious. How overvalued? More overvalued than single songs at the iTunes store. seriously 99 cents when i can download it for free or watch the video on youtube?

3.Dustin Penner 4.25 million- This signing will forever be remembered for the feud it sparked rather than the puzzlingly high figures. I have to admit; I like the guy and am always rooting for him. Going undrafted he paid his dues in the A and got his chance. But the sheer volume of coin the Oilers gave a guy who has yet to eclipse the career 100 point mark earned him a spot on this list. How overvalued? More overvalued than a cupcake at fat camp.

2.Jeff Finger 3.5 million- Nope, no middle finger jokes here…Most Leaf fans didn’t know who Finger was when they signed him or still don't. Drafted 240th overall in the 99 draft, Finger battled it out in the NCAA, ECHL and AHL until finally playing his first game on Feb, 20, 2007. Finger went on to play 22 games that season for the avs notching 5 points. The next season finger dazzled to the point where many hockey people claimed he was the most improved player in the league. Finger plays a simple, defense-first game with a mean-streak which Joe Quinville swears buy. Obvious, reasons for the position on the list are that he’s only played one full season in the NHL and only 94 games in total. But, because of that I guess you can look at him like a prospect, one with a really sweet deal. How overvalued? More overvaled than a beer at the ACC.

1.Martin Havlat 6 million- In two seasons with the hawks Havlat has played 91 games with 35 goals and 49 assists for 84 points. So basically he’s supplied one good season for the price of two. It’s no secret he has to stay healthy because he hasn’t been since the lockout. But, injuries aside I don’t feel Havlat is the 90ish point elite player the Blackhawks think he is, plain and simple. How overvalued? More overvalued than a pair of pointy synthetic ears at a Star Trek convention.

Honorable Mentions- Bill Guerin 4.5 mil, Khabibulin 6.7 mil and Dwayne Roloson 3.6.

Briere will do alot better this season....he was missing Gagne all last year, when they had the KGB (Knuble Gagne Briere) line it was deadly

You are an idiot This is dustin Penners 3rd nhl season they locked him up hes only gonna improve now playing on the first line. Brier is worth every cent hes alot better than dury who gets paid the same last year and brier has so much leadership, roloson 3.5 mill at the time it was smart 3.5 is not much for a goalie

so was Lecavalier ....literally exactly - 17

oh i guess St louis is overrated too...he was - 23 oh Dan Boyle - 29...he must suck oh what about Olli Jokinen - 19

Hey Corey, no disrespect but.

Tampa scored 221 and let in 266.
Therefor team wide they were -45.
-17 on that team isn't that bad.

Philly scored 245 and let in 227.
Therefor team wide they were +18.
-17 on that team is very poor.

BTW.....For the record I don't think Briere is very overpaid at 6.5 mil per.

yeah i hear your point, but the whole 10 mil thing was more of a signing bonus then a value thing, and DC for the record...Briere was a -22 not -17

I just dont think he is overpaid,
he will do alot better with Gagne on his wing this year.

another of my main points is that just because he had a minus rating doesnt make him overpaid...which is more me against "DC" then the blogger

but to say Briere wont get near 72 pts? crazy

Er, except, Penner played on the first line last year and was no great shakes (he was basically useless once Horcoff went down). This year, with the acquisition of Erik Cole, Penner will be looking at third line minutes and reduced PP time, so his counting numbers will take a hit.

Ya i kno he did, and horcoff only played 53 games penner stayed consistent if anything he was worse at the begining. He has played to nhl seasons. and has 90 points in his carrer and no penner will not be on the third line he be on the first line... And as for pp mins hell be on the first line oilers play 4 forwards penner, hemsky.horcoff and cole or sammy, im makin apoint about his carrer hes still young and adjusting and hes a very streaky player and with stoll and torres gone ull see
