-Free agent signee Glen Metropolit will only be a third or fourth line player, but he will still be counted on as a key player this season. The Flyers lost their entire fourth line from last season, including grizzled veterans Sami Kapanen and Jim Dowd. As a result, coach John Stevens and company will be counting on the 34 year old Metropolit for leadership and gritty, two way play. If Metropolit can provide these things, he will end up being an excellent free agent signing.
-The Flyers have not yet chosen a captain, but have had discussions with several players about wearing the letter "C" on their sweater. For those who don't know, 2007-08 captain Jason Smith departed for Ottawa, leaving Philadelphia to replace him as their team leader. With the primary candidates likely Kimmo Timonen or Mike Richards, the Flyers hope to have their captain selected before training camp starts on September 20.
-Braydon Coburn is recovering well from the facial injury that he suffered in the Conference Finals against the Penguins in May. He is expected to play an even bigger role than last year, as he will likely be on the ice for most key situations. For sure, the Atlanta Thrashers must be kicking themselves for trading this young defensive stud away in February 2007.
