According to Tanabe's agent, his hockey career his over due to concussion symptoms. The doctors told him it would be too dangerous too play again after Tanabe missed the last 49 games last season because of an apparent concussion in a Dec. 18 game against Toronto.
The Hurricanes and Tanabe reached a settlement that will pay the latter $850,000 over the next three years. In 449 games in the NHL, Tanabe, 28, recorded 30 goals and 84 assists for 114 points. He played for Carolina, Phoenix and Boston.
