Brunnstrom scores hat trick in NHL debut

Stars rookie Fabian Brunnstrom scored three goals in the 6-4 Stars win over the Predators. Brunnstrom, 23, played in his first NHL game with Dallas after being a healthy scratch during the first two games.

The Swedish sensation scored 2 goals in the 2nd period and scored the game-winning goal in the 3rd period to complete the hat-trick, joining Alex Smart of the Montreal Canadiens (Jan. 14, 1943) and Real Cloutier of the Quebec Nordiques (Oct. 10, 1979) as the only NHL players to score a hat-trick in their first NHL game.

He played with Brad Richards and Sean Avery tonight.

I predicted 48 points for the Swedish rookie and if he continues to play like that he'll easily surpass this mark.

The one thing that everyone will have to keep in mind when it comes to Brunnstrom is that whatever kind of performance comes next will be looked upon harshly. He's set the bar extremely high for the rest of the season, and while people won't be expecting a hat trick per game, you may even find fans who are disappointed by a 40-50 point season. The main thing is to know that any bad play by Brunnstrom will be due to his youth.
