Thrashers attendance sinks... again

Announced attendance for the first four home games averaged 13,943, down 1,342 per game from the first four games of last season. The Thrashers have announced two crowds of fewer than 12,000 people, the lowest attendance in more than four years. And the announced attendance, the number of tickets distributed, has been thousands higher than the number of people in the seats.

League-wide, season ticket sales are up 4 percent and single-game sales are up 13 percent, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told reporters last week.

Atlanta is a large football and baseball market, and has never been a good hockey market (see Atlanta Flames now in Calgary). If there is a team that has to be moved in the next few years, Atlanta is the front-runner, in front of Nashville, Columbus and Phoenix.

Sounds like Gary Bettman should put another team in Atlanta to spur some healthy competition. Idiot.

I was under the impression that Columbus had one of the better attendance records in the league, but I guess I was wrong. I would think that Florida, Atlanta & Nashville would be getting ready to move shop in the next few years...
