Leafs and Habs after Kovalchuk?

According to a few sources, the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs are targeting Atlanta Thrashers' Ilya Kovalchuk who is reportedly on the market.

Preliminary discussions were held at the GMs meeting last week.

I'll dig more into this to give you more details about the players that could be involved.

Kovalchuk has 6 points in 10 games for the lowly Thrashers this season.

I have an idea for the Leafs.

Get Kovy, and then after the season is over, sign Sundin for 1-2 years. He'll have the high scoring winger he's always wanted, and with the development of our young guys plus whoever we add in free agency, the Leafs would be contenders in the east.

yea, but to get kovi youd have to give up your young guys to get him...and the leafs need picks and i dont see atlanta doing this without getting picks...either the leafs give up at least 3 of their better roster guys, or 1 or 2 of their roster guys as well as picks...it doesnt really add up...id love to see kovi as a leaf but in a way id rather them continue the year evaluating this squad while trying to trade a dman or 2 for some picks...lots of good FAs this summer and lots of cap space, as well as an accurate evaluation of who to keep going forward...anyways, whatever im not a gm so...

This is just the temptation that will show what the true intention of the Leafs is. I love Kovalchuck he is an exciting and talented young player in the NHL and definitly someone you would want on your team. But at what cost????

This isn't it for the leafs and as a fan as much as it is tempting let's just sit tight with what we have and let someone else over pay for him.

Stick to the plan Cliff... Stick to the plan.

How about the Bruins going after him and putting him with Savard. Next try to get Hossa.

Your all kidding right? Ilya Kovalchuk is a franchise player and if you have a chance to get him you take it no matter what the cost. He is better than any player we could get in the draft and is only what 24 or something.

Use your heads man!

Hm. Conditional 1st and Vorobiev would be a start.

that's also true.. the Leafs need to keep their assets if they plan on going through with the rebuild.

Cliff has yet to get that homerun deal he's been talking about, sooo....

maybe somehow we can get him without giving up a huge chunk of our future. perhaps, 1 roster player, one good prospect, and a few mid range picks like a couple 2nd rounders and 3rds or something.

I have an idea. How about the Leafs don't trade for Kovy, and at the end of the year they throw a shit load of cash at him? Nobody loses anything, except Atlanta lol. Blows my mind that some fans want Toronto to trade for him. Why? Maybe next year we can trade our 1st for Rick Nash while we're at it.

lol, I'm drunk...was thinking of Gaborik.

How was it foolish? Explain to me why Vorobiev and a conditional 1st could not be used as part of a package to get Kovalchuk.

The Leafs will add someone big in the off-season, mostly if they land a Top-3 pick.. Fletcher still has plans to do more - don't think they are standing pat because they've exceeded expectations so far.
Still to go: Ponikarovsky, Blake, White and possibly Colaiacovo. Van Ryn has player better than anyone has expected so far - true? He's done a real good job thus far, my opinion at least..

Anonymous Kovi has one year remaining on his contract after this one that's why they can't give him a truck load of money.

This is tempting as stated before. Kovi would look great in a Leafs uniform and help in the Goals For Column as well as the PP percentage and eality would be the top scorer. But at what cost do you pick up one of the top scoring wingers in the league when all you would have besides him is a solid top 6 defense and beside maybe Hagman and Grabovski group of 9-10 3rd and 4th line forwards...

It's not time yet to make this type of deal. You need a core in place and then you make a big deal like this.
