Steve Downie Suffers Mild MCL Strain

Yahoo! Sports reports that Flyers forward Steve Downie's knee injury, occurring Wednesday against the Capitals, was diagnosed to be a mild MCL strain. The injury happened when he went down to the ice after a fight with Caps rookie Jay Beagle. Philadelphia GM Paul Holmgren said he wanted no part in guessing how long Downie will be out or if he will be available for opening night against the New York Rangers, saying, “It’s a mild strain, but for now, we’re just going to have to play it by ear.” This would not be the biggest loss for the Flyers, though Downie is expected to be part of the regular forward rotation in Philly.
